What is SEO and why is it important to your website?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website in a search engine's "natural" or "organic" (not paid for) search results. Here's a great little video to explain.

What you need to remember when editing your site

We have included all the meta keywords and meta tags and descriptions when building your website. When editing your site you need to think about two elements of SEO. On Page optimisation and Off page optimisation

On Page optimisation

This deals with making sure Google can find your web pages so they can show them in the search results, as well as making sure you have relevant, detailed, and helpful content to the search phrases you're trying to show up for.

When editing your site you must remember to write key phrases and words in your content that search engines will pick up therefore recognising that your site is the site they want.

Remember to mention the core search phrases aswell as you're geographical area. Also don't forget visitors may type in words you didn't expect for the service/ product you provide. It is worth doing some research on common search terms in your field.

Off Page optimisation

This deals with trying to get other websites to tell Google what your website is about as well as that it's an authority in the industry and a website that they can trust to show in their results. This is done through acquiring links on other websites.

By links we mean a hyperlink on another website which when clicked will take you to your website

To do this add your website to all relevant directories or any association or business linked to your business (clients, suppliers etc). You can exchange this with adding links to their website on your links page. The more external links to your site the better as long as they are reputable links. Government sites and others with established reputations are great links to your site.
